COURTYARD DESIGN

This redesigned project proposes a strategy that aims to come up with a new idea, combining both functional and aesthetic aspects together, which gives the courtyard a new life at CSU. I have also created construction documents to support my design.

The courtyard is in the middle of the CSU Morgan Library, a four story tall building with glass windows, which have a good view looking toward the courtyard. The original design does not provide any private space. People in the courtyard can been seen from the windows on all four floors. This currently gives people an uneasy feeling of being watched, when spending time there. Furthermore, the old-style paving and furnishings are not appealing to students, nor inviting as a place to spent time, relax, read and study. Another deficiency is that there are no lighting facilities in the courtyard, therefore it can only be used during the daytime.

This first approach to redesign the courtyard, is to change the form to a curved shape, which will add dynamic beauty, and break from a simple and ordinary impression. For the colors, applying a bright red color emphasizes the modern sense. The most important aspect is that the red structures define small private-feeling spaces, and each space contains seating and lighting elements. Students cannot be disturbed while reading or studying in these small spaces. These red structures resemble a red ribbon flowing through the whole courtyard. Additionally, looking out of the windows, the scenery will be amazing during the winter time when observing the pure white color of snow, contrasting with the bright red color.
