From 2007-2010 ESA (Earth Services & Abatement ) performed structural demolition on multiple hangars and bridges at the former Stapleton International Airport(SIA). For the past decade, ESA has performed over 20 million of Asbestos Abatement, Demolition and Soil Remediation as part of the SIA redevelopment project. This cleanup project is still ongoing now.

 

In my design, I proposed 3 phases for this site and each phase last 5 years. Phase 1 is called Phytoremediation, which uses plants to clean up the contaminated soil. To be more specific, sunflower is one of many plants that are now known to aid in “phytoremediation,” a process that employs various types of plants to remove, transfer, stabilize, and destroy contaminants in the our soil, water and air. Compared to other cleanup methods, such as soil excavation or pumping polluted groundwater, phytoremediation has become a clean, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to reclaim and reuse land that has been tainted by poisonous chemicals and heavy metals. What’s more, Sunflowers have an amazing capacity to not only transform the health of a space in your community, but also add beauty.

 

In Phase 2, more circulation will be added to this site, which will provide more accessible opportunity for people. There is a heavily traffic road cross this site and it separates this site to two different places. In order to address this issue, a bridge will be proposed to connect the two parts and it will make this site become one park. There also will be some landforms change in north-east side of the park, which will provide people with different landscape experiences. 

 

In Phase 3, the bridge will go through the park and across the pond, the bright red bridge will become an icon in this area. What’s more, the bridge is not only just a place to connect the 2 parts of the park, but also provides big green open spaces. There also will be a children play place and family focused places in north-east which is surrounded by the big mounds. A skate park and some soft paved playgrounds are wonderful places for younger generations. There is also a big pond and curved channel that goes through the park, and the wood decks provide good view to the wetland and draw more people to close to water front. Besides these, there are two big event lawns on west and east of the park, which is a big open space for some big festivals events and also can be picnic area for families. The visitor center on the west of park provides food and drinks and bathroom which offers people’s daily needs.

 

The well designed new park will become a nice, wonderful open space for people of all ages and of different needs. People can have a rest and have some food in the park after shopping in the North Field Shopping Mall. The residents who live in the north of the park can walk their dogs and play some sports in the new park. The works who works in the industries and warehouses in the area east of the park can take a break or relax there. When people driving through the highway running south of the park, the drivers will see the amazing sceneries of the new park. The new multifunctional parks will become a new landmark and popular places in the north Denver area.
